About Janet
Location: Nebraska, USA
A Little About Me: Hello! I’m Janet Schmitz, Mixed Media Momma, on my socials. I live in northeast Nebraska, USA. My husband and I have 3 grown children who live nearby, along with our 3 grandchildren. We have been empty nesters for quite a few years now and have adjusted quite nicely to a different lifestyle. Sometimes it may even seem that we are busier than when the kids were under our roof! I have been creating since I was a little girl, making paper-bead necklaces out of old, beautiful wallpaper in the corner of the kitchen on the farm. We didn’t really have much, but I learned to make something really beautiful out of very little, and I was always trying new things to combine with paper or fabric. My mother and grandmother were fabulous seamstress’s! So maybe that is why I still love to sew in all my projects. Being on Devid’s team, I really feel free to create anything as long as I use the beautiful products he designs. It really is freeing and inspiring. Color is also my other inspiration and motivator! Don’t care where it comes from, but I will soak it in to let it fuel me to create!!
My Favorite Project
Why It’s My Favorite: My favorite ECD Project is probably making covers for the collections. I really look at the collection, especially the papers (cuz I really am a paper junkie!), the colors, the shapes, how I can create texture through what I am provided, and then just let inspiration take the lead.
Craft Tip or Must-Have Tool
My Favorite Crafting Tool or Tip: A must-have tool is my inks, which are right by my desk. I like to have the brown inks ready at hand, but the other Distress inks and oxides are within arm's reach. With just a turn of my chair, the second tool that I can’t live without is my sewing machine and vintage iron. I found a beautiful stand that houses both of them literally right next to my table. There is probably not a project that I do not use some kind of sewing in. Even on cards that I am making, I just love to add little details to make them special!
A Peek Into My Craft Space
About My Craft Space: I live in an 800-square-foot house with a slanted roof. So, using the 3 x 3 open cubes, I utilize the wall space. I have an area for mixed media and fabric, and a creative paper space with my desk, which has been customized for how I like to create. The items I regularly use every time are right there, like paper, sewing machine, inks, oxides, sprays, glazes, all my cutters, and my Sizzix Switch. I utilize all vertical space with hooks for all my Sari silk ribbons. I need to see what is there, so no closed cabinets for me. If I see it, I will use it!!!
Thanks for coming along to get a glimpse of my creative life and space! Hope you are inspired!!!
